What a Cambodia eSIM costs, which local networks it uses, and how to set it up before you leave Australia.

Quick answer

For most trips to Cambodia, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Smart, Cellcard and Metfone); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Cambodia eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$12.50 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Cambodia

Cambodia’s main networks are Smart, Cellcard and Metfone. Airalo’s Cambodia eSIM uses Smart (4G listed). Phnom Penh, Siem Reap (Angkor) and the coast are well covered; in rural areas and some temple sites further out it can be slower.

How much data you need for Cambodia

  • Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
  • Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
  • Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.

These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.

eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM

OptionSet-upTypical trade-off
Travel eSIMOnline, before you flyUsually data-only; often cheapest for short trips
Australian roaming packNothing to installKeeps your number; usually more per GB
Local Cambodia SIMAirport or shop, with IDLocal number; queues and registration

Cambodia-only vs an Asia plan

Many Australians visit Cambodia as part of a longer trip through Vietnam and Thailand. If so, an Asia plan that covers all three can be simpler than buying separate eSIMs — Airalo’s Asia plan lists Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. Asia eSIM plans compared → · Vietnam · Thailand

How to install and when to activate

Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for Cambodia, so they’re not in the table above.

Airalo sells a dedicated Cambodia eSIM, plus regional and global plans that include Cambodia.

Questions travellers ask

Does an eSIM work in Cambodia?

Yes. Travel eSIMs for Cambodia connect to local networks such as Smart, Cellcard and Metfone, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.

When should I activate my eSIM?

Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.

Will my phone work with an eSIM?

It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.

Do I get a local phone number with a Cambodia eSIM?

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.

Is an unlimited Cambodia eSIM really unlimited?

No. Airalo’s unlimited Cambodia plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
