For most trips to Sri Lanka, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Sri Lanka eSIM started from US$4.50, with unlimited plans from US$12.50 for 3 days, when we checked on 24 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s main mobile networks are Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch. A travel eSIM roams onto one or more of them, and the network your provider uses matters more than the brand on the app. Providers usually list their partner network on the plan page — Airalo names Mobitel for Sri Lanka. 4G is widely available in cities; 5G availability on travel eSIMs varies by provider.
How much data you need for Sri Lanka
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local Sri Lanka SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

Coverage on the hill country train route
The scenic train line between Kandy and Ella climbs through mountains and tunnels, so expect signal to drop in and out along the way. Download maps, tickets and entertainment before boarding. Coverage is generally better in Colombo, Kandy and the southern coastal towns.
How to install and when to activate

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for Sri Lanka connect to local networks such as Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a Sri Lanka phone number with an eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
