eSIM for Italy: Compare Plans for Your Trip

What a Italy eSIM costs, which local networks it uses, and how to set it up before you leave Australia.

Quick answer

For most trips to Italy, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (TIM, Vodafone IT, WindTre and Iliad); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Italy eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$11.00 for 3 days, when we checked on 24 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Italy

Italy’s main mobile networks are TIM, Vodafone IT, WindTre and Iliad. A travel eSIM roams onto one or more of them, and the network your provider uses matters more than the brand on the app. Providers usually list their partner network on the plan page — Airalo names Wind Tre (plus one other network) for Italy. 4G is widely available in cities; 5G availability on travel eSIMs varies by provider.

How much data you need for Italy

  • Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
  • Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
  • Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.

These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.

Italy-only vs Europe-wide plans

If Italy is your only stop, a country plan is often simplest. If you are also visiting France, Switzerland or elsewhere, a Europe-wide plan avoids buying several eSIMs — but check that every country on your route is covered, and that Switzerland (outside the EU) is included if you need it. How to install and when to activate

Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. Step-by-step activation guide → Comparing providers? Read our Airalo review, Nomad review or every destination compared.

Questions travellers ask

Does an eSIM work in Italy?

Yes. Travel eSIMs for Italy connect to local networks such as TIM, Vodafone IT, WindTre and Iliad, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.

When should I activate my eSIM?

Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.

Will my phone work with an eSIM?

It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.

Do I get a Italy phone number with an eSIM?

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
