Desk locations and hours from Queenstown Airport’s rental car page, read 4 November 2026. Gravel scores from our reading of each supplier’s terms. Off-airport companies (JUCY, Apex and others) collect by shuttle; check the pick-up point and shuttle hours before you book.
The roads around Queenstown your contract may rule out
Queenstown is gravel-road country, and some of the best-known drives are the ones rental contracts name as off-limits. Drive one and you are uninsured on it, whatever cover you bought. These are the Queenstown-area roads we found named in supplier terms.
| Road | Near | Named as off-limits by |
|---|---|---|
| Skippers Canyon Road | Queenstown | Europcar, Hertz, GO Rentals, Ezi, Apex |
| The road to Macetown | Arrowtown | Europcar, Hertz, GO Rentals, Ezi, Apex |
| Glenorchy–Paradise Road | Head of Lake Wakatipu | Ezi, Apex |
| Deer Park Heights | Queenstown | Ezi |
| Matukituki Road | Wanaka | Apex |
Glenorchy is fine; past it is the question. The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy is sealed. The Glenorchy–Paradise Road beyond it is the one Ezi and Apex exclude. JUCY excludes cover on any unsealed road apart from short campground access roads, so on a JUCY car even the Paradise detour is on you.
The Crown Range isn’t banned. None of the suppliers we read names it. It is sealed, steep and reaches 1,076 metres, so in poor weather the longer State Highway 6 route via Cromwell is the gentler drive to Wanaka.

Winter: chains, ski roads and the new $750 fine
- Carry chains May to October. Lake Wanaka Tourism says chains must be carried on the Crown Range Road through the winter months, and QLDC says to carry them if you travel over the Crown Range.
- Fit them when told to. From winter 2026, Queenstown Lakes District Council can fine drivers $750 for failing to fit chains in snowy or icy conditions on council-managed roads. That includes the Crown Range and the road up to Coronet Peak, and the rule bites when snow is settling, a “chains required” sign is showing, or Police, ski field staff or the council tell you to fit them.
- Book chains with the car. Budget and Enterprise offer snow chains, Avis offers them at select locations, and Hertz says to ask about chains and winter gear when you book.
- 4WD doesn’t make ice safe. QLDC’s own winter advice says four-wheel drives are not necessarily safer on ice, especially downhill.
Check the QLDC winter road report before heading up the Crown Range or to the ski fields.
Before you book
- Licence: an Australian licence is in English, so you don’t need an International Driving Permit. How long you can drive on it changed on 1 November 2026; see your Australian licence in NZ.
- Card: Europcar, for one, needs a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit and won’t take debit, prepaid or cash.
- Excess: the standard excess on NZ hire cars runs into the thousands. How excess and bonds work →
- One-way: finishing in Christchurch or Dunedin? One-way fees vary by company and vehicle, so check at the booking step.

Questions people ask
Which car hire companies are at Queenstown Airport?
Queenstown Airport lists Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Ezi, SIXT and Thrifty with desks in the terminal, GO Rentals at an on-airport branch about a minute’s walk away, and Hertz a short walk away on Airport Avenue (checked 4 November 2026).
Can I drive a Queenstown hire car to Skippers Canyon?
Not with most companies. Skippers Canyon Road is named as off-limits in the terms of Europcar, Hertz, GO Rentals, Ezi and Apex, which means you would be uninsured on it whatever cover you bought.
Do I need snow chains for the Crown Range in winter?
Carry them from May to October. From winter 2026, Queenstown Lakes District Council can fine drivers $750 for not fitting chains in snowy or icy conditions on council roads, including the Crown Range and the Coronet Peak access road. Ask your rental company for chains when you book.
Can I pick up a hire car at Queenstown Airport late at night?
Sometimes. Enterprise does not offer after-hours pick-ups, Ezi needs after-hours collection arranged at booking, and GO Rentals offers 24-hour pick-up by arrangement. Give your flight number so the desk knows if you are delayed.
Is the Crown Range banned for rental cars?
No. None of the New Zealand suppliers whose terms we read names the Crown Range Road. It is sealed, but it is a steep alpine pass that reaches 1,076 metres, and the route via Cromwell is the gentler option in bad weather.
How we checked this
