For most trips to Malaysia, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Maxis, CelcomDigi and U Mobile); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Malaysia eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$11.50 for 3 days, when we checked on 24 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Malaysia
Malaysia’s main mobile networks are Maxis, CelcomDigi and U Mobile. A travel eSIM roams onto one or more of them, and the network your provider uses matters more than the brand on the app. Providers usually list their partner network on the plan page — Airalo names Maxis for Malaysia. 4G is widely available in cities; 5G availability on travel eSIMs varies by provider.
How much data you need for Malaysia
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local Malaysia SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi coverage notes
Coverage on local networks is generally strongest in cities and along major highways, including Kuala Lumpur and George Town in Penang. Expect weaker signal in rainforest, highland and remote island areas, including parts of Borneo. Check the provider’s coverage map for your route.
How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. Step-by-step activation guide → Comparing providers? Read our Airalo review, Nomad review or every destination compared.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in Malaysia?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for Malaysia connect to local networks such as Maxis, CelcomDigi and U Mobile, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a Malaysia phone number with an eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
