eSIM for Canada: Compare Plans for Your Trip

What a Canada eSIM costs, which local networks it uses, and how to set it up before you leave Australia.

Quick answer

For most trips to Canada, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Bell, Rogers and TELUS); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Canada eSIM started from US$7.00, with unlimited plans from US$17.61 for 3 days, when we checked on 24 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Canada

Canada’s main mobile networks are Bell, Rogers and TELUS. A travel eSIM roams onto one or more of them, and the network your provider uses matters more than the brand on the app. Providers usually list their partner network on the plan page — Airalo names Bell for Canada. 4G is widely available in cities; 5G availability on travel eSIMs varies by provider.

How much data you need for Canada

  • Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
  • Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
  • Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.

These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.

Coverage outside the cities

Canada is huge and mobile coverage is concentrated in populated areas and along major highways. Expect long gaps in national parks, the far north and on remote stretches of road, so download offline maps before driving. If you are combining Canada with the USA, a North America regional plan may suit better than a Canada-only plan.

How to install and when to activate

Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. Step-by-step activation guide → Comparing providers? Read our Airalo review, Nomad review or every destination compared.

Questions travellers ask

Does an eSIM work in Canada?

Yes. Travel eSIMs for Canada connect to local networks such as Bell, Rogers and TELUS, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.

When should I activate my eSIM?

Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.

Will my phone work with an eSIM?

It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.

Do I get a Canada phone number with an eSIM?

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
