For most trips to the UAE, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (e& (Etisalat) and du); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Dubai eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$12.50 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Airalo prices checked on Airalo’s own site on 30 October 2026, in US dollars; providers change prices without notice, so confirm before you buy. Airalo lists Etisalat as the network for this eSIM.
Coverage and networks in the UAE
The UAE has two main networks, e& (formerly Etisalat) and du. Airalo’s UAE eSIM uses Etisalat (5G listed), and it works in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates. Coverage in the cities is excellent; in the desert it can be thin.
How much data you need for the UAE
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local Dubai SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

Voice and video calls in the UAE
The UAE has long restricted internet voice and video calls on some apps (WhatsApp and FaceTime calls have been blocked at times), while messaging works. Rules change, so check before you rely on app calls, and keep your Australian number active for SMS codes.
Stopover or longer stay?
On a stopover of a day or two, airport and hotel wi-fi may be all you need, or the smallest data plan. If Dubai is a stop on the way to Europe, check whether your Europe eSIM lists the UAE — Airalo’s Europe plan doesn’t (checked 30 October 2026) — or buy a short UAE plan for the stopover. How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for the UAE, so they’re not in the table above.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in the UAE?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for the UAE connect to local networks such as e& (Etisalat) and du, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a local phone number with a Dubai eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
Is an unlimited Dubai eSIM really unlimited?
No. Airalo’s unlimited Dubai plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
