For most trips to South Africa, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s South Africa eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$19.00 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Airalo prices checked on Airalo’s own site on 30 October 2026, in US dollars; providers change prices without notice, so confirm before you buy. Airalo lists Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom as the networks for this eSIM.
Coverage and networks in South Africa
South Africa’s main networks are Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. Airalo’s South Africa eSIM lists several partner networks, including Vodacom and MTN (5G listed) and Cell C (4G). Coverage is good in Cape Town, Johannesburg and along the Garden Route, but can be thin or absent in game reserves and remote parts of the Karoo, so don’t rely on mobile data on safari.
How much data you need for South Africa
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local South Africa SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

Plans with call minutes
Unusually, Airalo sells South Africa plans that bundle call minutes with data (for example 5GB with 50 minutes), alongside data-only plans. That can help if you need to ring a lodge or tour operator, but check the plan details for what the minutes cover. eSIMs with a phone number →
South Africa-only vs a regional plan
Most visitors to South Africa stay in the country, so a South Africa plan is the simple choice. If you’re adding Namibia, Botswana or Zimbabwe, check each country separately — we haven’t verified an Africa regional plan for those yet.
How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for South Africa, so they’re not in the table above.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in South Africa?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for South Africa connect to local networks such as Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a local phone number with a South Africa eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
Is an unlimited South Africa eSIM really unlimited?
No. Airalo’s unlimited South Africa plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
