How much data does an island trip actually use?

Beach days are lighter on data than city breaks: you are mostly checking maps, booking ferries and long-tails, messaging and posting the odd sunset. As a rough guide:

  • 7–10 days, light use: 3–5GB. Saily’s 5GB, 30-day plan (US$7.99) or Airalo’s 5GB, 15-day plan (US$7.50).
  • Two weeks, moderate use: about 10GB. Airalo 10GB/15 days (US$10.50) or Saily 10GB/30 days (US$10.99).
  • Remote work from Koh Phangan or Koh Lanta: 20GB or more, or an unlimited plan. Check the 5GB daily cap and the hotspot rules first.

These are estimates, not measurements. Resort and café wi-fi stretches a small plan further.

Coverage between the islands

A Thailand eSIM rides on Thai networks, so the same plan works wherever those networks reach. Airalo lists dtac for its Thailand eSIM (checked 4 November 2026); dtac and True merged in 2023, so that is the combined True–dtac network. Saily doesn’t say which Thai network it uses.

No provider publishes island-by-island coverage maps, so plan for gaps rather than be surprised by them:

  • Download offline maps of each island before you leave wi-fi.
  • Screenshot ferry tickets and hotel confirmations, because signal can drop mid-crossing.
  • On snorkelling day trips and in marine national parks, assume you might be offline for a few hours.

Questions travellers ask

What is the best eSIM for island-hopping in Thailand?

For a two-week Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui loop, a 10GB plan covers maps, ferry tickets and plenty of photos. Airalo’s 10GB, 15-day Thailand plan was US$10.50 and Saily’s 10GB, 30-day plan US$10.99 when we checked on 4 November 2026. Both work across the whole country, islands included.

Does a Thailand eSIM work on the islands?

Yes. A Thailand eSIM is a national plan, so the same eSIM works in Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. No provider publishes island-by-island coverage, so expect weaker signal on small islands, in national parks and on boats between them, and download offline maps before you set off.

Which network does Airalo use in Thailand?

Airalo listed dtac (5G) for its Thailand eSIM on 4 November 2026. dtac merged with True in 2023, so you are on the combined True–dtac network. Saily does not name its Thai network.

Is an unlimited Thailand eSIM worth it for a beach holiday?

Only if you stream or run a hotspot every day. Airalo’s unlimited plans and Saily’s both slow to 1 Mbps after 5GB a day. Airalo’s 7-day unlimited plan was US$21 on 4 November 2026, about double a 10GB plan that most island trips never use up.

Can I share my eSIM data with a laptop or a friend?

Yes. Saily includes hotspot tethering on all its plans, and Airalo allows hotspot use. Anything you share comes out of your own data allowance or daily cap.
